Flannan
Gaelic: ‘Little Blood Red’. The diminutive form of Flann. Less well known nowadays as its root name. An old traditional Irish name which was once fairly widespread. Its current popularity derives in a great deal from its use as the pen name of the 20th century Irish Times humourist Brian O'Nolan (1911-66) who wrote under the pseudonym Flann Q'Brien. Has been anglicised as Florence.
Florence
Latin: 'Flowering One'. Florrie and Flurry are pet forms. A rare name used for both boys and girls. As a feminine name it is used to translate Blathnaid, from blath, 'flower'. Its use as a boys name derives from its common usage to anglicise names such as Flann,. Fiar, Fineen and Fitheal Florence O'Sullivan, President of the Irish College, succeeded his uncle, John, in the year 1699. John left 732 florins for Bourses to the Irish College, which now realize about £380 per annum. The Bourses were left for his relations of the second degree, provided they were born in Ireland, etc. The Very Rev. Florence O'Sullivan, the nephew, died 19th August, 1731. He left 1,098 florins for students in theology, philosophy, law, and medicine.

Gaelic: ‘Man of Strength’. Variant of Fergal. A traditional name still very popular today which is also associated with St Fergal, whose Irish name is a version of his given name Virgil. Farrell is a variant. Also the name of an 8th-century king of Ireland, Fearghal mac Máeld{u'}in, famous for his murderous exploits. Famous Name: Fergal Sharkey, Lead singer of the eighties Irish new wave band The Undertones.

Popularly abbreviated to Frank or Frankie. Famous name: Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791), an author and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence representing New Jersey and St Francis of Assisi.

Germanic: 'Peace Ruler'. This name was used in Ireland to anglicise the Irish traditional name Fardoragh. Frederick Douglass 1818-1895 was one of the most promionent early American liberals. A reformer, slavery abolitionist, editor, author and statesman, Became known as ‘The Sage of Anacostia’ Douglass is one of the most prominent figures in African American history.

Fursa
Commemorates St Fursey who according to legend has a gift which enabled him to see a vision of the world to come. Fursey was born on the island of Inisguia en Lough Carri, Ire¬land, as a noble. He founded Rathmat Abbey, now probably Killursa. In 630 Fursey and his friends went to East Anglia, England, where he founded a monastery near Ugremouth on land donated by King Sigebert. In his later years, Fursey went to France to build a monastery at Lagny, near Paris, France.
Fynn
Gaelic: 'Fair'. Finn MacCool is one of the key figures in Irish and Scottish mythology. Finn MacCool was head of the Fianna and the father of the poetic hero Ossian. But his most famous role is as the giant who erected the Giants' Causeway on the Antrim coast. In other tales however he is a normal sized man. See also Fingal. A spelling variant of Finn.
